Presentation on Economic Impacts of Tourism to Protected Areas by USGS Economist

Thursday, June 1, 2017

Economist Cathy Cullinane Thomas attended and presented at an expert workshop on the economic impacts of tourism to protected areas at the International Nature Conservation Academy in Vilm, Germany. The workshop was aimed at establishing a global standard for visitor and socioeconomic monitoring in protected areas. The German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation sponsored the event and brought together twelve experts from six countries, including the USA, Finland, Germany, Brazil, Italy, and Seychelles. Workshop participants will work together to produce a best practices guidelines publication in the coming year. The guidelines will be targeted to an international audience of protected area managers and researchers, and will provide guidance on counting visitation, surveying visitors, and estimating visitor spending and multiplier effects.
