Raven Flights to Count Cranes

Tuesday, March 13, 2012

During the week of 19-23 March 2012, FORT scientists Leanne Hanson and Chris Holmquist-Johnson, along with personnel from the USGS National Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Project Office, will conduct Raven A UAS night flights at the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge in Monte Vista, CO. The objective of these flights is to obtain a population estimate of roosting sandhill cranes on the refuge during the spring migration. This population estimate will assist managers in planning for and creating critical habitat that the birds need during spring and fall migrations through the Central Flyway. For this event, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and USGS are issuing a joint media advisory inviting them to the refuge to learn first-hand about the work. Colorado Parks and Wildlife staff will also attend as potential cooperators on population estimation project for sage grouse.
