FORT Scientist Mentors Winning High School Science Team

Friday, May 2, 2008

Sarah Spaulding, USGS ecologist, mentored a team of students in the Boulder (Colo.) High School Research Seminar. Seniors Anna Hermann, Kelly Lane, and Danielle Pite were selected to present the results of their research at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Atlanta on May 11-16. For their first-place project, "Didymosphenia geminata: The Core Question," the students examined the sediments of Naknek Lake, Katmai National Park, Alaska, to test whether D. geminata blooms have been increasing globally and to evaluate morphological changes in the species from the years 1218 to 2003. They presented their results at the 2008 Arctic Workshop at the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR) at the University of Colorado. This summer, Spaulding and the students plan to submit their results to a scientific journal for publication.
