2016 Data at Risk Project

legacy product (n) - Unreleased data, software, physical samples and publications developed by USGS projects completed prior to 2011 that are stored in an old/obsolete format, computer system or facility and are, therefore, unavailable to the scientific community and greater public.

risk (v) - exposure to danger, harm, or loss.

In 2016 the USGS Community for Data Integration (CDI) funded The 2016 Data at Risk (DAR) project to establish an inventory of USGS legacy products, particularly those at risk of being lost or permanently damaged, and develop a method for evaluating, prioritizing, and preserving them. Do you or your science center have legacy products that USGS should consider preserving and releasing? Are they stored in a flood-prone basement or trapped on punch cards? The DAR project is an excellent opportunity to compete for immediate USGS preservation and release assistance including digitization of original analog products, conversion to an open-format, creation of CSDGM metadata, and management of the IPDS product release workflow.

To begin building the inventory, the DAR project is using the USGS Legacy Data Inventory and Reporting System (LDIRS) to allow any USGS staff to document legacy products that should be considered for preservation and released as USGS products through the 2016 DAR project or future legacy product recovery projects. Legacy product records that are submitted to the inventory by May 9, 2016 will be evaluated for risk, level of effort, and feasibility of successful release. Based on the results of the evaluations, products will be prioritized and selected for preservation and release assistance from a USGS data scientist funded by the 2016 DAR project.

Getting Started

Submitting legacy product records for evaluation is open to all USGS staff and is easy! Once you've read the "2016 Data at Risk Workflow and Guidelines" complete these 4 steps:

  1. Log in using your USGS email address and password: https://www.fort.usgs.gov/ldi/user
  2. Click on “LDIRS Inventories” in the main menu and then click “New LP” from the drop-down.
  3. Complete and submit the “Create Legacy Product” form.
  4. Repeat for each legacy product you want to add to the inventory.
