Conceptual diagram of nitrogen deposition

Nitrogen in the form of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and ammonium (NH4) is carried by the wind and deposited in high-elevation areas. The extra nitrogen can act as a fertilizer, causing unnatural changes to plants, animals, and water and soil chemistry in sensitive alpine ecosystems.
