The Policy Analysis and Science Assistance Branch(PASA) of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Fort Collins Science Center (FORT) hosted a workshop February 21-23, 2006, in Fort Collins, Colorado. This workshop addressed the issues of transportation systems on public lands, including research, collaboration, and management approaches to inform decision making. The workshop served as a forum to address managers' and decision makers' progress and future plans regarding three decision support approaches:

  1. Research: We focused on conflicts, policy, social values, and changing demographics of recreation users.
  2. Collaboration: We used case studies to frame the issue of using a collaborative process as a tool for decision making.
  3. Management: We looked at current OHV policies, regulations, and planning efforts and their impact on visitor use and expectations.

The workshop included a discussion of decision-maker needs for additional information gathering techniques that are necessary for sound resource management, adaptive manangement and policy formulation.
