USGS-National Park Service Vegetation Mapping Program

Research Task: RB00CM0.2.0
Task Manager: Bob Waltermire

The USGS-National Park Service (NPS) Vegetation Mapping Program is in the process of developing vegetation cover maps for most units in the National Park System. FORT’s GIS and Remote Sensing Team was asked to derive vegetation polygons for several NPS units, including Manzanar National Historic Site, Vicksburg National Military Park, Canyon du Chelly National Monument, Mesa Verde National Park, and others. The team uses different methods to derive the land-use and land-cover map classes for the park units, among them (1) feature extraction software to develop initial polygons based on aerial photography acquired by the National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) with field-data reconciliation, and (2) digital color-infrared photography, slope, and aspect data along with expert input. The FORT team finalizes the vegetation database after NPS personnel complete the accuracy assessment.
