The USGS Fort Collins Science Center (FORT) and the Natural Resources Leadership Academy (NRLA) at Washington State University recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding formalizing their cooperation in providing essential dispute-resolution training to natural resource professionals. One of the goals of this partnership is to provide FORT negotiation course participants with options for additional training that builds and supports effective natural resource stewardship.

As training partners, the NRLA and FORT provide different but complementary training options. FORT's courses provide training and practice in basic and advanced negotiation skills, and institutional analysis. NRLA curriculum topics include the following:

  • Leadership and teamwork skills
  • Collaborative processes and policy consensus building
  • Interpersonal communication skills
  • Contemporary public policy
  • Small group facilitation skills
  • Applied learning practicum projects
  • Mentoring processes
  • Social capital and partnerships
