Six lakes and five streams in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore were analyzed for impacts from human activities. Two activities identified as being likely to affect aquatic habitat were road building and timber harvesting. Both of these land uses can increase the rate of soil erosion resulting in heavy sediment loads which affect biota in lakes and streams. Prior to sampling, risk analyses were developed for both timber harvesting and road building within the park and buffer zone.
