This report summarizes the results of a workshop - "Science for Avian Conservation: Understanding, Modeling, and Applying Ecological Relationships" - developed to identify the role of the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) in supporting bird conservation initiatives in the Western Hemisphere. The recent growth and momentum of national and international bird conservation initiatives, such as the North American Bird Conservation Initiative (NABCI), have highlighted the need for science-based conservation planning and implementation. The USGS has a clear mandate to help build a strong scientific foundation for local, regional, national, and international conservation efforts. These legislative and partner mandates were the motivating forces behind development of this workshop.
