FORT ecologist Janet Ruth was honored with a Partners in Fight (PIF) 2006 National Leadership Award for her work as the USGS-PIF coordinator. Dr. Ruth has been a key contributor to the PIF initiative since its inception in 1990, providing significant leadership through her long-term participation in national committee meetings and workshops. She currently chairs the Research Working Group and established the Research Needs database, a key source of information to academia, the USGS, and many other entities working in scientific ornithology. Through her efforts, the PIF Website is hosted by the USGS and continually offers different types of information to enhance its status as a useful and current ornithological resource. Dr. Ruth also contributes directly to grassland bird conservation through her own research and by organizing workshops and symposia on this topic. As an example, Dr. Ruth and several key collaborators have been developing Doppler radar as a tool for tracking and understanding bird migration patterns.
