Several USGS scientists are meeting Journey “trekkers” at various points along a Canada-to-Mexico trek across public lands in the West sponsored by the Public Lands Interpretive Association and the National Geographic Society. Those presenting “on the trail” include biologists Geneva Chong and Tom Stohlgren (they will lead the trekkers on a search for non-native plant species in the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument on Sept. 15th, and discuss the invaders’ histories and interactions with native species, both locally and over larger areas); Heidi Sellers and Natasha Kotliar (North Rim of Grand Canyon, September 3rd) who presented on burn severity variations on a single fire and natural forest recovery processes; and Gordon Mueller, who will discuss the influence of humans and nonnative fishes on the disappearance of native fish species on the Colorado River, and programs that USGS is involved in to slow and reverse these impacts (Lake Powell, Utah, Sept. 10; Flaming Gorge Reservoir, Wyoming, Sept. 24).
