USGS Plays Integral Role in International Partners in Flight Conference

Scheduled for March 20-24 at Asilomar in California, this is the third international conference sponsored by Partners in Flight, an interagency coalition that works to conserve landbird species in the Western Hemisphere. The focus is on implementation of Bird Conservation Plans covering the entire United States, along with other bird conservation initiatives under the umbrella of the North American Bird Conservation Initiative. USGS is providing both monetary support and a strong scientific presence. Among USGS scientists from at least seven science centers and five cooperative units, three are serving as session co-leaders, 17 are presenting, and 10 others are co-authors on conference papers. Their topics include landbird conservation planning in Alaska, shorebird and landbird migration monitoring, maritime communities and habitat trends in the South Atlantic and Gulf Coast, modeling of population growth from marked birds, bird habitat associations within an ecoregion, fire and avian ecology, pesticides and birds in Mexico, and reports on both the USGS NABCI research initiative and the ICEBIRG workshop on avian conservation.
