USGS ecologist Tom Stohlgren will be participating in the Biological Fingerprinting Workshop at the American Museum of Natural History in New York on December 3-5. Fifty scientists from around the globe will be developing a strategy to document and map the biodiversity of the planet. The workshop is jointly sponsored by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and the Center for Applied Biodiversity Science (Conservation International, Washington, D.C.) Emphasis will be placed on developing partnerships at local, regional, national, and international scales among governments, non-government organizations, and the public to provide credible, unbiased, and accessible data on many aspects of biodiversity science. The issues of high-resolution remote sensing of the environment, hot spots of native and non-native species, and ecological forecasting with high performance computing capabilities are of primary interest to the USGS and DOI. Sharing information and tools for the Digital Government are of general utility to NASA, DOI and other Departments, and the general public.
