New Rapid Response Team for Destructive Brown Treesnake

The USGS announces the formation of a rapid response team to address potential Brown Treesnake sightings in the Pacific. The Brown Treesnake is responsible for the extirpation of nearly all native bird species on Guam and most bats, reptiles and amphibians. Keeping this voracious snake from other non-infested islands is a top priority for the Department of the Interior's Office of Insular Affairs, who is funding the team. Based in Guam, the interagency team will include a pool of specially trained and certified Brown Treesnake researchers. When the team's services are requested by local authorities, they will travel by the fastest available means to the location of a sighting and will use all available tools (visual searches, traps, education programs, and barriers) in cooperation with local counterparts to capture the snake or delimit an infestation.
