Short-term Climate Projections for Species Distributions

 

Climate change and invasive species are distinct and urgent conservation issues that need to be addressed with integrated science. Using long-term climate datasets for the U.S., USGS scientists Catherine Jarnevich and Tom Stohlgren forecasted the potential distribution of invasive species under current climatic conditions as well as climate scenarios projected for the years 2020 and 2035. They explored how the potential distributions might be affected by changing climate, and the management implications associated with these changes. Specifically, they distinguished locations where populations were decreasing, stable, and increasing. Drs. Jarnevich and Stohlgren are presenting this work to scientists, educators, and policy makers from around the world at the 93 rd annual Ecological Society of America meeting, being held August 3-8 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
