USGS ecologist Jill Baron gave a presentation on current and potential effects of climate change and the interactions of climate change with atmospheric nitrogen deposition at the Rocky Mountain National Park Climate Friendly Parks Program (CFP) workshop held March 22-23 at the Park. A joint effort between the National Park Service and the EPA, the CFP aims to provide tools to parks for calculating their greenhouse gas emissions and setting goals for their reduction, and supplies educational materials for park interpretation of climate change to the public. Of the 11 national parks that have implemented the CFP, Rocky Mountain NP is only the second to include discussion of adaptation methods for protecting natural resources from the effects of climate change, and Dr. Baron led a discussion of possible methods. Workshop participants included Park and other NPS staff along with officials from the EPA, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, and local governments.
