The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) will be a continental-scale research "instrument" designed to accommodate real-time ecological studies spanning all levels of biological organization and temporal and geographic scales. On January 4-7 in Los Angeles, scientists began considering the major environmental issues to be addressed and planning for the necessary infrastructure. During this first of three NEON Design Committee meetings to develop this detailed science plan, FORT scientist Jill Baron and other participants developed a proposed list of major national ecological questions to investigate through NEON and began developing the infrastructure to measure and monitor them. The next meeting will be in Boston in March 2005, where committee members will reduce and consolidate the number of science questions to consider and specifically identify needed infrastructure. At the final meeting, scheduled for June 2005 in Estes Park, Colorado, the team will synthesize the plan and recommendations for inclusion in the Major Facilities Equipment Research Committee's proposal to the National Science Foundation.
